February 2006 - Talkeetna

We had a great fly/drive in to Talkeetna at Lattitude 62. The food and service was great and the conversation excellent. The turnout was better than I anticipated. Those in attendance included: Burnie Schultz, Steve Bryant, Rick Davis, Walter Yankauskas, Warren & Vickie Enyeart, Jesse & Kara Bunn, Jake & Vivian Jacobson, and Patricia and me. I have done my best, with my wife's help to remember everyone. If I missed anyone please let me know and if I made a mistake on a name please let me know that also.

When the officers discussed doing a short presentation at our fly-ins I started the ball rolling with a brief discussion on topics from my recent flight intructor renewal weekend ground school.

I believe those that arrived by aircraft were Steve and Rick in one aircraft and Jesse and Kara arrived in a second aircraft. The runway was not cleared when Jesse & Kara arrived and they had to circle awhile and enjoy the scenery.

All in all it was an enjoyable get-together. I want to thank everyone who attended. I did tell Warren & Vickie I would let all of you know that if any of you have a seat or two available for the Skwentna fly-in in March they would love to keep a seat warm. So even if there are two aircraft with a seat in each aircraft they would like to fly Skwentna for the festivities.

We hope to see all of you at the Skwentna Roadhouse on March 19, 2006 (Sunday) from 1130 - 1300.

I did hear from Walter that he got as far as Willow. At any rate Eddie and Walter had a get together there. Apparently Walter had a passenger who turned a little green.

Yeh - We almost made it. I was traveling with a non-pilot friend who was not doing so well in the rough air. WeI stopped in Willow to hook up with Eddie and the Willow gang and by then Talkeetna was 12 gusting to 17 with winds forecast to increase. Over Nancy lake we hit some pretty good turbulence and the guy I was with was turning a bit green. Our biggest concern was placed to tie down in 17+ knot gusts and just the comfort level as we were getting up to 25K winds from the south at 1500 ft. We decided to bail in Willow and not head further north. I don't think the Willow contingent went either. It was blowing pretty good at Willow. It was a very bumpy flight back to Birchwood and by 1:00 Birchwood was gusting to 22+ Knots. I don't think my friend had much fun.

Glad a few folks made it.

Hello SWPC'ers

When you think you've eaten enough over the Christmas Holiday. Make one more trip to the Valley and gorge yourself with more holiday cheer. Before the credit card bill's come in - before your wife can return your Christmas gift for something really cool, mark your calendar for this festive event. We will be serving Alaska's best Ball Park Franks (they do plump when ya cook 'um) and tasty reindeer burgers (left over from Santa's "lame team") Be sure to be there to celebrate the approaching longer days of the 2005 Alaskan Summer!

For all you navigationally challenged pilots, its located between Finger Lake and Wolf Lake with an East-West facing strip. I also have a few pics attached showing the runway from both east and west approaches. Freq 122.9 with all left hand patterns, runway numbers are 08-26 with runway 08 being the better approach. Once on the ground I will have signs posted showing where to go.

I have also enclosed a map showing driving directions. Our address is 3130 N Departure Ct. phone 357-2992hm 223-3662cell. Once you're on Departure Court, we are the 5th house on the left.
