2007 Fly-Ins and events...

February 2007

We'll be meeting at Noon at the Latitude 62 Restaurant next Sunday, 11 Feb.

Rick Brenden talked with the acting airport manager today (Friday) about the ground conditions at Talkeetna. He said that the runway is snow packed and is suitable for ski only planes. The transit parking area has some exposed gravel in the back area so be careful there.

Be extra alert when flying to Talkeetna on Sunday. If I am not mistaken the Iron Dog snow machine race starts at Big Lake at 11:00 AM on Sunday. This has the potential to congest the airspace with spectators looking down at snow machines rather then out for traffic.

Also the long anticipated hat order is in and I'll have them at the fly (drive) - in. If you are a paid member in '07, we'll take care of ya'.

Talkeetna Feb 2007

Thanks to Burnie for the photo.

We had a dozen people show up to our "drive-in". The weather was iffy for flying. A low cloud front just north of Rustic Wilderness turned at least one plane around. Of course, after lunch when we were driving back down south, the snow had stopped, the fog was burned off and it was getting clear and sunny. Driving north, I didn't see a single plane in the sky, driving south, I saw three in the air.

Willow Chamber of Commerce

Iditarod Restart Golf Tournament

March 8, 2007

The Willow Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Golf Tournament, on the ice, on Willow Lake, on March 8th, 2007.   It is called the Iditarod restart Golf Tournament because it is on the ice we clear for the restart and just six days after the teams leave.

We would like the prestige of having a fly-in team from your club fly in and play golf.  There is a pancake feed fundraiser by the local Lions Club all morning.  It cost $25 per player and four to a teea.  We have golf clubs and balls for you.  We want to take pictures of planes in the backdrop of our golf course.  Please fly-in and have some golfing fun with us.  It is not necessary to know much golfing to have a great time.

Call Jim Huston, 495-9000 if you have any questions.  We can send you information and team entry forms.  If you’re on wheels we can pick you up and take you back across the street to Willow Airport.

June 2007

When:

Sat June 23rd 2007

Noon Potluck
Host: Wayne and Carrol Vance 495-7576
Where: Rustic Wilderness

Driving Driections: Mile 80 marker of the Parks Hwy, turn left if northbound on Wilderness Rim then the second left at the runway. I am located in the middle of the field. It's the hanger with the red roof.

The runway is good but crowned so stay in the center. It looks short from the air because of the trees, but you can touch down half way down or more and still have plenty of time to stop. Total length is 2200 feet. We usually use 122.8 the same as Willow because it’s close.

Fly safe. Wayne

July 2007

When:

Sat July 21st 2007

Host: Dave King
Where: Dave King's Last Frontier Guest Ranch or more
commonly referred to as King Ranch

The July flyin will be at the King Ranch on the 21st. The position is 61:47.440 / 148:21.170. This is about 4 miles up the Matanuska River from Chickaloon River or mile 81.5 on the Glenn Highway. The air strip is 1,800' long with a considerable slope at the West end. The Summer wind is usually out of the West and parallel to the strip. The wind is usually calm or light in the morning and builds during the day. There is a wind sock on the hangar and another one near the West end, South side of the strip.

The strip is 1,900', 06/24, elevation 1,320'.

I will have my hand held in hand on 122.9. If you want an on site weather report before take off call me on my cell phone: 232-9109.

Subject: Stolen Floats

I also had a misfortunate event happen and I would like to have our members aware of it.   I had a set of EDO 89-2000 floats stolen from my tie down around 9:00 / 9:15 am Friday, the 19th. of October 2007.  Lake Hood Space #87  (2 spaces west of the Aviation Museum)

A witness saw a white male, with a medium build, loading them onto a snow machine trailer hooked to a dark colored (green?) mini pick up (Ford Ranger / Nissan?).

Another witness saw this (or similar) pickup with a set of Edo 2000 floats on a snow machine trailer turning left from Postmark Drive onto International Airport Road about the same time.  They were later spotted on the Glen Highway, northbound, north of the Knik River bridge.  I have a reward for the safe return of these floats - No questions asked!

These floats are rigged for a Producer or a Pacer, so they are either going onto a shortwing, or someone may be trying to get rid of a set of struts for a shortwing, and looking for a set of float struts for something else.
